Visa Process and Requirements for Your Dream Country, The UK

Types of Student Visa

With an 89% increase in student visa applications from India to the UK, efforts are being made to speed up the processing time for UK study visas. Students who plan to study in the UK for more than 6 months should be aware of the following 3 types of UK study visas:

  • Short-term Study Visa for those taking English language courses for up to 11 months.
  • Student Visa for higher education, previously known as the Tier 4 Student Visa.
  • Child Student Visa for children aged 4-17 who wish to study at an independent school in the UK.

Documents Required

Keeping up-to-date with the latest educational events is just a click away by providing a mobile number. Applying for a UK student visa requires a larger amount of documents than a tourist visa. Aspirants must have the necessary documents and supporting documents of financial and academic records, and it's important to refer to the UK Student Visa checklist before going to the consulate for the visa interview. The required documents include:

  • Completed student visa application form
  • A letter of acceptance for the course issued no more than six months before the application
  • Proof of funds for the course fees and living costs for up to 9 months
  • The visa fee payment confirmation receipt.
  • Payslips
  • Original mark sheets or provisional certificates may also be required.
  • Proof of funds for the visa application.
  • Certificates of exams like SAT or IELTS.

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for a UK student visa, the following criteria must be met:

  • The student must have an offer of an academic course from a licensed student sponsor.
  • Must have enough financial resources to support themselves throughout the duration of the course.
  • Must be proficient in the English language in terms of speaking, reading, writing, and understanding.
  • If the student is 16 or 17 years old, they must have consent from their parents.

Part- Time Work Permit

If you are a student in the UK enrolled in a bachelors’ degree program or higher at a college that is on both the UKBA Sponsor list and the list of recognized bodies, you are permitted to work up to 20 hours per week during your studies and full-time during vacation or summer breaks. However, if your course is below degree level, such as a foundation or pre-sessional English program, you are only allowed to work 10 hours per week. Additionally, students with a Short-term Study Visa are not permitted to work.

Full time Work Permit

After completing your studies, if you wish to continue working in the UK, you will need to first apply for a Graduate Visa, and then a Tier 2 visa which is intended for highly skilled workers. This means that a work permit is not included with your student visa, and you must apply for a separate work visa.

If your visa is granted for more than 12 months, your spouse may work in the UK. However, if your visa is granted for less than 12 months, or you are enrolled in a course below degree level, your spouse will not be permitted to work in the UK.

Process of Applying for Visa

The process of obtaining a UK Student Visa involves several steps, and applications are typically reviewed within three weeks of submission.

Step 1: To begin, you must determine if you meet the qualifications for the visa, which include having a confirmed spot at an educational institution and sufficient funds to cover tuition and living expenses.
Step 2: The second step in the UK Student Visa application process is to gather the required documents.
Step 3: Submit the application online by creating an account on the official UK Visa website, completing the online form, printing and signing it, and scheduling an appointment at a visa application centre. Once the online application is submitted, you will receive an email with a reference number.
Step 4: Another step in the UK Student Visa process is paying the application fee.
Step 5: The final step in the UK Student Visa process is to attend an appointment at the visa application centre on the scheduled date. During this visit, you will submit your application, as well as provide a facial photograph and fingerprints.
