Undergraduates' Admission to the University of Tokyo

To be effective in your application process and increase your chances of getting in, students interested in English-taught programmes at the University of Tokyo should be aware of the eligibility requirements that differ between programmes.

Concerning the University of Tokyo,

One of the most esteemed universities in Japan is the University of Tokyo, founded in 1877 as an imperial university. The University of Tokyo is a significant academic centre with 10 faculties, 15 graduate schools, and 30,000 students, 2,100 of which are from outside the United States. It is one of the top institutions chosen for MEXT's Top Global University Project, which will illustrate the excellence of Japanese higher education competitiveness.

Admission Requirements

Undergraduate Level

To apply for the programme, applicants must meet two mandatory prerequisites.

Requirement 1

Assures that the applicant has completed the requisite secondary academic foundation, as is explained in more detail below. The candidate must meet one of the four requirements listed below.

(1) The candidate has completed the primary and secondary education requirements of a 12-year school.

(2) The candidate possesses one of the following credentials:

(a) A diploma from the International Baccalaureate (IB) (awarded by the International Baccalaureate Organization)

(b) Abitur

(c) GCE A-level, or General Certificate of Education Advanced Level (designated by the UK)

(3) The applicant has completed Japanese pre-university preparatory institutions for students planning to study in Japan that are designated by the Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science, and Technology. The applicant has completed an educational system that is less than 12 years long.

(4) The candidate must pass a formal exam demonstrating that they have academic credentials that are on par with or better than those attained through a 12-year schooling programme. By August 31, 2020, the applicant must be at least 18 years old.

The University of Tokyo may accept eligibility if applicants do not fit into any of the aforementioned categories after carefully assessing each candidate. To begin the Individual Admission Review Process, those applicants must get in touch with the PEAK Undergraduate Admissions Office by October 24, 2019.

Requirement 2

The second requirement states that the candidate must have studied in a language other than Japanese for at least four out of the first six years of school and for at least five out of the next six years. To put it another way, these applicants must have completed the majority of their coursework in a language other than Japanese.

The institution bases this restriction on the fact that the PEAK programme is primarily intended for learners of languages other than Japanese. Students are recommended to apply for the April-entry admission of PEAK rather than the September-entry admission if they have had Japanese-language instruction.

Advanced Level,

Generally speaking, all graduate schools demand that applicants have finished or anticipate finishing their undergraduate degree, which is the equivalent of 16 years of education. Candidates with different qualifications may contact the admissions office for the graduate programme they wish to apply to. Many programmes also require a GRE score as part of the application package, so candidates must take the test before using it.

A particular note: Some graduate schools might have limits depending on the universities from which the applicants received their bachelor's degree. For instance, the Graduate School of Economics International Program in Economics (UTIPE) only admits applicants from overseas colleges and does not consider those who attended Japanese universities for their undergraduate degrees, including American universities having campuses there. These applicants must instead apply for admission through the regular entrance exam, not the UTIPE. Similar restrictions apply to the Graduate Program for International Students in the Graduate School of Science.

Some colleges, like the UTIPE programme, may not admit research students and just normal graduate students. Prospective applicants are advised to check the eligibility requirements for each respective graduate school they are interested in.

Application Method

1. Online Application

Account creation and application submission make up the online application for TIU's E-Track Program. After that, each applicant is thoroughly processed and screened by the TIU admissions office. Each application will cost you 5,000 yen. This means that further charges will be necessary if applicants decide to reapply for whatever reason during a different application period. This cost is non-refundable in any situation.

2. Eligibility for Submission

Candidates must meet both of the conditions listed below:

1. A typical education lasts 12 years.

* Applicants who skipped a grade or finished Year 12 in an accelerated high school programme are also welcome.

2. Possess a degree from a school that followed an 11-year programme and was accredited by Japan's Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science, and Technology (MEXT). The standard curricula of Belarus, Myanmar, Peru, Russia, Sudan, Uzbekistan, and Ukraine have all been accepted. (As of the 31st of January 2019).

3. Have finished their studies at a Japanese secondary school, a foreign preparatory school for students wishing to study in Japan, or a Japanese pre-university institution.

4. Possess a 12-year education from a foreign institution that has been granted accreditation by WASC (Western Association of Schools and Colleges), CIS (Council of International Schools), or ACSI (Association of Christian Schools International). It's possible that applicants from overseas schools with accreditation from other bodies won't be accepted. Please reach out to us to verify your eligibility.
