Mandatory Eligibility Requirements of Undergraduate Admissions Abroad

All universities have their own set of eligibility and document requirements that are needed to be fulfilled by the students if they aspire to apply for undergraduate admission to their institutions. Although these requirements differ from university to university or even country to country, we have compiled a list of the most basic and mandatory requirements of the majority of institutions across the globe.

High School Transcripts- If you wish to pursue your undergraduate degree abroad the most basic requirement for you to fulfill will be your high school credentials. You must have completed at least 12 years of prior education to be able to apply to any institution abroad. You will be required to produce your high school completion documents. In some instances, the program you are applying to might have a few subject requirements, for example, they might require you to have studied maths and science in school if you wish to pursue an engineering degree in their institution.

SAT or ACT Scores- If you are planning to study abroad in the US, some European country, or Australia, you might be required to provide them with your ACT or SAT score. Not all countries or universities require you to have attempted the SAT or ACT, you need to be well aware of the requirements of the university you wish to apply. These scores may or may not be asked, according to the university, but for the US they are a mandatory requirement.

Entrance Tests- If the university of your choice does not require you to produce ACT or SAT scores it is quite a possibility that they may require you to attempt their universities entrance exam. Again, this requirement differs from university to university. For example, if you wish to pursue your higher education abroad in Japan you will be required to attempt the EJU or Examination for Japanese University admissions, which is a standardized test taken by a centralized university body. All international students who wish to pursue an undergraduate degree at a Japanese university are required to attempt this common entrance exam for the majority of universities in Japan.

English Language Proficiency- English language proficiency is a must for any institution across the globe. this is a mandatory requirement regardless; of the country, in which you wish to pursue your undergrad degree. There are a few ways in which this can be tested by universities. First of all, there are English language proficiency tests, like IELTS, TOEFL, PTE, CET, Duolingo English Test, etc. The IELTS and TOEFL are widely accepted exams all over the world. Then there may be a few country-specific language exams, like CELPIP or the Canadian English Language Proficiency Index Program widely accepted by all organizations across Canada.

The second method, the university or college you wish to apply to has its own entrance-level English language exam.

Another method of assessment is if you have studied in an English medium school throughout your academic life then, even if you are not a native English speaker, the above requirements might be waived off.

These methods depend on the university and do not apply to all universities across the globe. But the most accepted English proficiency assessment is the English proficiency tests, such as IELTS or TOEFL.

Other Language Requirements- Specific language requirements can be asked of international students by a university that is not situated in an English-speaking nation. For example, if you wish to pursue your undergraduate degree in Germany or Japan, you may be required to produce German or Japanese language competency proof. But it may not be the case for every program, majorly if the program you wish to pursue is administered in English. But for all the programs that are taught in German or Japanese, it will be mandatory to provide proof of specific language proficiency.

Letters of Recommendations- Another important criterion for admission are letters of recommendation. You may be asked to produce at least 2-3 letters of recommendation written by your high school teachers that have taught you in the past. A letter of recommendation gives the university insight into what kind of student you are from a third-person perspective.

Statement of Purpose- An SOP is like a life narrative; you describe whatever you have done and accomplished in your life until now. It is one of the most crucial aspects of admissions.

Essays- The university or college you prefer might ask you to write a few essays on the topics provided by them. It is one of the steps of screening student applications and shortlisting students they deem to be a worthy candidates.

Documents About any Extracurricular Activity and Achievements- Universities seek students who have had an all-around development. Any accomplishment or initiative you have taken outside the walls of the classroom will shine brighter in your college application form. If you have participated, won a competition, have any extracurricular hobbies in which you have accomplished a good feat, or even have done some volunteering work include all of these achievements in your application forms.

Valid Passport- The most important legal document. It not only serves as identity proof but is required before even thinking of stepping foot in another country.

Student Visa- After you have been accepted into the university of your preference you will be required to apply for your student visa, without which you would be denied admission or even entry to another nation.

Proof of Financial Stability- Many Universities require you to provide proof that you will be able to pay the university fees or even be able to afford to live in their country. If you have taken any loans or are eligible for any scholarships all of these need to be mentioned to universities.

All of the requirements mentioned above can be quite burdensome to be carried out by a student all on their own. To help lift some of the burdens of the students’ shoulders, Masterclass Space, the best undergraduate admission consultants are here to help.
