The main emphasis of the BITS Pilani Institute is on providing advanced education in the fields of engineering and sciences. The latest addition to the campus is a significant one, as it includes a new building that boasts 23 air-conditioned classrooms, a 200-seater auditorium, and will serve as the home for various departments, including Computer Science & Information Systems, Mathematics, Management, Economics & Finance, and Humanities and Social Sciences. Additionally, the building will house the Institute's computing lab and other facilities. The building is situated in a sunken plot in front of the Institute's clock tower, and its design includes a rotunda and a landscaped avenue, which adds to its impressive appearance. The majority of the building is located below the ground level, which allows the rooftop to align with the ground level, and the terrace garden harmonizes with the verdant surroundings, providing a panoramic view.
Dining and Accommodation
The Institute is designed to be entirely residential, and therefore, all students are provided with hostel accommodation. However, in exceptional circumstances, a student may be granted permission to become a day scholar if their parents or close relatives reside in Pilani. There are eleven hostels available for male students, and a single hostel complex is reserved for female students. The hostel rooms are equipped with all necessary furniture, and each hostel has a common room that includes Cable TV facilities. Additionally, all hostel rooms are fitted with Internet connectivity, and solar water heating systems are available in all the hostels.
Each pair of boys' hostels shares a common kitchen cum mess unit, while the girls' hostel has its separate mess within the boundary of the hostel. It is compulsory for students residing in the hostel to have their meals in the Hostel Messes. The messes that are attached to the hostels are managed by students in collaboration with Sodexho.
Fests and Functions
There are fests at BITS throughout the year to make their college life even more happening and full of fun. Here are some of the most significant fests.
BOSM
Every year, BITS-Pilani conducts the BOSM (BITS-Pilani Open Sports Meet) competition on its Pilani campus, which is a major annual sports event. The competition includes various events such as hockey, cricket, basketball, football, volleyball, track and field, badminton, tennis, table tennis, squash, and weightlifting, among others. Colleges from all over India are invited to participate in the event, which is held during the first semester of the academic year. BOSM has proven to be a tremendous success, with over 80 colleges participating from across the country every year, and its popularity continues to grow.
APOGEE
Every year in March, BITS Pilani organizes APOGEE (A Professions Oriented Gathering over Educational Experience), which is a major technical festival. The event includes various activities such as workshops, project displays, paper presentations, online events, and guest lectures. APOGEE attracts more than 2,000 participants, who have the opportunity to attend guest lectures from notable speakers such as Jeff Liberman and Walter Lewin, as well as engage in events like Robot Wars, Full Throttle Grand Prix, and Social Hackathon. Additionally, APOGEE has also featured IgNobel laureates. The festival is a great platform for gaining practical knowledge and continues to be a popular event among students.
BITSMUN and QED
The acronym BITSMUN refers to BITS Model United Nations. This conference involves various activities, such as individual speeches, debates, moderated caucuses, unmediated discussions, and drafting resolutions.
QED is an annual debate competition organized by the Debating Society of BITS Pilani, which takes place alongside BITSMUN. The total amount of prize money for both teams and adjudicators exceeds two lakh rupees.
