Say you want to go from a 500 to a 650, and you can study for 15 hours a week; in this situation, you might be ready to take the test in a matter of months. However, if your goal is to improve your score by 200 points but you can "only" devote 8 hours a week to studying, you will likely need more time to prepare. If you want to do well on this test, you will need to put in more effort than just cramming.
Third, plan how you'll keep yourself inspired and make progress in your studies. Do you know of anyone else who works or socializes with you who might be taking the exam at the same time? Get together with other students to study. If you're taking a course and need a study partner, you should probably ask around in the classroom.
And fourth, before you commit any real money, make use of any and all free and high-quality study materials available to get started and see how it goes. You'll have a lot clearer idea at that point of whether or not you're willing to put in the effort and resources required to try for the rewards, and if you are, you'll be able to focus on doing what you need to do to give yourself the best possible chance of success on the exam.
