Reading and Writing Section of the Digital SAT: A Comprehensive Guide

Introduction

The digital SAT Suite assessments' Reading and Writing section evaluate students' proficiency in English language arts literacy and various academic subjects like literature, history, the humanities, and science. The section tests essential comprehension, rhetoric, and language skills needed for college and career success. During the assessment, students are given multiple-choice questions requiring them to read and understand texts, analyze text structure, revise to improve expression and edit to meet Standard English conventions.

Time and Questions

The Reading and Writing section has 54 questions split into two modules of 27 questions each, representing two stages. Of the 27 questions in each module, 25 are operational and count towards the score, while 2 are pretest questions that don't affect the score. Pretest questions are used to collect performance data and may be used in future assessments. Pretest questions are designed to be indistinguishable from operational questions to maximize students' effort. The number of pretest questions is minimized to limit their impact on the test.

Time Aloted for Each Module

Students have 64 minutes to complete the Reading and Writing section, with 32 minutes allocated for each module. After the time for the first module expires, students move on to the second module and cannot go back to the first module's question.

Score and Average time per question

Students receive a Reading and Writing section score based on their performance, which is scaled to 200-800 for the SAT, 160-760 for the PSAT/NMSQT and PSAT 10, and 120-720 for the PSAT 8/9. This score, along with the Math section score, determines the student's overall assessment score. The average time allotted to each question is 1.19 minutes.

Format

the Reading and Writing section consists of four-option multiple-choice questions with one correct answer, called the key. Each question has its own passage and is not connected to any other question in the section. For more information visit Masterclass Space.

Word Count

Each reading and writing test question is accompanied by a passage or pair of passages with a word count ranging from 25 to 150 words. To eliminate the impact of long or short words, a word is defined as 6 characters, including letters, numbers, spaces, and symbols (punctuation included). The word count is determined by dividing the total character count by 6. If a single question uses two short passages, the combined word count must fall within the given range.

Passage Domains

The Reading and Writing section questions align with four content domains.

One of them is Information and Ideas, where students are tested on their ability to comprehend, analyze, and reason using the information stated and implied in texts (including graphics) to Interpret, integrate, and evaluate, information and ideas.

Craft and Structure is another content domain in the Reading and Writing section. Here, students are evaluated on their comprehension, vocabulary, analysis, synthesis, and reasoning skills and knowledge to understand the meaning of important academic words and phrases in context, analyze texts rhetorically, and make credible connections between multiple texts that are related to the topic.

Expression of Ideas is the third content domain in the Reading and Writing section. It assesses students' revision skills and knowledge to enhance the quality of written expression, meeting specified rhetorical objectives.

Standard English Conventions are the fourth content domain of the Reading and Writing section. It tests students' editing skills and knowledge to ensure text conforms to the essential conventions of Standard English grammar, word usage, and punctuation.

Questions to be Asked

The passages used as stimuli for Reading and Writing questions cover a variety of academic disciplines and text difficulties that align with college and career readiness standards. The literature passages are taken from published third-party sources, while the other passages are written for the test to maintain realism by including factual information and adhering to the norms and conventions (structure, language patterns, vocabulary, style, and tone) of authentic texts in the respective disciplines. The questions are similar to those found in rigorous secondary school classes, entry-level college courses, and workforce training programs, requiring students to understand information and ideas in texts from various disciplines and complexities; demonstrate proficiency in using textual and quantitative evidence; determine the meaning and use of important academic words and phrases in context; revise texts to meet specific rhetorical goals; and edit texts to conform to the core conventions of Standard English grammar, usage, and punctuation.

All questions in the Reading and Writing section are in multiple-choice format with four options and one correct answer, known as the "keyed response" or simply the "key." The three incorrect answers, referred to as "distractors," are intended to reflect common mistakes students might make in answering the question. The level of the plausibility of the distractors depends on the intended difficulty of the question, but none of the distractors should be considered better than the key for students with the appropriate level of reading and writing skills.
