If you are staring down a stretch of AP exams this May, one of the first things you want to know is simple: how long is an AP exam actually going to take? It is a fair question, and knowing the answer early takes a real weight off your shoulders. Many AP exams run about 2 to 3+ hours, depending on the subject, and most include a multiple-choice section and a free-response section. This guide gives you a 2027 duration chart for popular AP subjects, the section-by-section breakdown, and the practical test-day timing you actually need to plan your day.
Most AP exams last around 3 hours, although the exact length depends entirely on your subject. Some exams are a little over 2 hours, while several run for 3 hours or more.
Many AP end-of-course exams include both multiple-choice and free-response components, but the order, timing, question types, and administration format vary by subject. One detail that should ease some of the pressure right away: on multiple-choice questions, your score is based on the questions you answer correctly. You do not lose points for a wrong answer or an unanswered question, so it is generally better to make your best attempt rather than leave a question blank.
Here is the section most students come looking for, and it pairs naturally with strong AP exam preparation. The chart below shows the approximate multiple-choice time, free-response time, and total testing length for widely taken AP exams in 2027. Treat these as testing minutes only, and always confirm the exact timing for your subject on its official College Board exam page, since exam structures can be updated from year to year.

Once you know the length, the structure is easy to picture. Most AP end-of-course exams have multiple-choice and free-response components, although the exact structure varies by subject.
Multiple-choice questions are a major component of many AP exams. You choose the best answer from the available options, and this section is scored electronically. Some exams place multiple choice first, while others use a different section order. As mentioned earlier, there is no penalty for a wrong or unanswered multiple-choice question, so making your best attempt is generally better than leaving a question blank.
Free-response tasks vary by subject. They can include essays, multi-step problems with shown work, or written and spoken responses. In the revised 2027 AP French Language and Culture and AP Spanish Language and Culture exams, free response is Section I and includes project-based speaking tasks plus an argumentative essay; the multiple-choice section follows as Section II. Many exams include a break between major sections, giving you a moment to reset before continuing.
AP Computer Science Principles works a little differently. Its assessment includes a Create performance task as well as a fully digital end-of-course exam. The end-of-course exam includes a 120-minute multiple-choice section and a 60-minute written-response section.
If you are choosing courses and thinking about stamina, this quick comparison helps. Among the exams covered in this guide, some run for just over 2 hours, while others extend to around 3 hours 15 minutes.
| AP Exam | Approx. Duration | Comparison |
|---|---|---|
| AP Chemistry | 3 hr 15 min | Among the longest |
| AP US History | 3 hr 15 min | Among the longest |
| AP World History: Modern | 3 hr 15 min | Among the longest |
| AP European History | 3 hr 15 min | Among the longest |
| AP English Language | 3 hr 15 min | Among the longest |
| AP Calculus AB | 3 hr 10 min | Slightly shorter |
| AP Calculus BC | 3 hr 10 min | Slightly shorter |
| AP Human Geography | 2 hr 15 min | Among the shorter |
| AP Macroeconomics | 2 hr 10 min | Among the shorter |
| AP Microeconomics | 2 hr 10 min | Among the shorter |
Among the longest exams covered here are AP Chemistry, AP US History, AP World History: Modern, AP European History, and AP English Language, each at about 3 hours 15 minutes. AP Calculus AB and AP Calculus BC are slightly shorter under the 2027 format at about 3 hours 10 minutes.
Among the shorter exams in this chart, AP Macroeconomics and AP Microeconomics take about 2 hours 10 minutes each, followed by AP Human Geography at about 2 hours 15 minutes.
Knowing which AP courses are the most difficult in advance lets you plan your energy rather than being surprised by it.
The way your time is split says a lot about how to prepare, and it differs by subject type.
STEM exams usually balance a multiple-choice section with problem-solving free response. AP Biology, for example, gives you 90 minutes of multiple choice followed by 90 minutes of free response, so accuracy and pacing carry equal weight. Under the 2027 format, AP Physics 1, Physics 2, Physics C: Mechanics, and Physics C: Electricity and Magnetism each give students 85 minutes for multiple choice and 95 minutes for free response.
Humanities exams often shift more time toward writing. AP English exams pair about one hour of multiple choice with two hours or more of free response. AP US History, AP World History: Modern, and AP European History retain a 55-minute multiple-choice section in 2027, followed by 3 required short-answer questions, a document-based question, and 1 required long essay. Beginning with the May 2027 exams, all 3 short-answer questions include source material, and the long-essay format repositions choice within a broader prompt. If your subject leans this way, building essay stamina matters just as much as knowing the content.
In 2027, the way you take the exam depends on your subject. Many AP
exams are fully digital and taken in the Bluebook app, where students
complete both multiple-choice and free-response work on
screen.
Fully Digital AP Exams
AP Statistics is an important change for 2027. Beginning with the May 2027 exam, it moves from hybrid digital to fully digital, which means both its multiple-choice and free-response sections are completed in Bluebook.
Other exams use a hybrid digital format.
Hybrid Digital AP Exams
In these exams, students complete multiple-choice questions and view free-response questions in Bluebook, but handwrite their free-response answers in paper booklets.
The six AP World Language and Culture exams—Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, and Spanish Language and Culture—transition to fully digital testing in Bluebook beginning in May 2027.
Two more subjects change mode in 2027. AP Spanish Literature and Culture also becomes a fully digital exam in Bluebook, so students complete both sections on screen and hear audio prompts through the app rather than on a CD player. AP Music Theory moves in the other direction and becomes hybrid digital: students hear audio prompts and answer multiple-choice questions in Bluebook, handwrite their free-response answers in paper booklets, and record their sight-singing response in Bluebook. Both exams require wired headsets, so confirm equipment with your school well ahead of exam day.
The exam mode does not replace the official timing for each subject. Knowing whether your test is fully digital or hybrid simply means one less surprise when you sit down, so check your subject's format well before exam day.
The published testing time is only part of your time at the exam location. Your total time there can be longer because of:
A simple rule saves a lot of stress: follow the reporting instructions your AP coordinator gives you, not just the length of the test itself, and do not schedule anything too tight immediately after your exam. Giving yourself that buffer means you walk in calm and walk out without rushing.
The regular 2027 AP Exam administration takes place over two weeks, from May 3–7 and May 10–14, 2027.
One more change is worth noting for 2027. College Board now labels the two daily timeslots Session 1 and Session 2 rather than morning and afternoon. For most schools, including all schools in the lower 48 states, Hawaii, and Washington, D.C., Session 1 still begins at 8 a.m. local time and Session 2 at 12 p.m. local time, but start times have shifted in some locations to protect exam security across time zones. Exams can also begin up to an hour after the listed start time, which is another reason to work from your coordinator’s reporting instructions rather than the clock time you saw online.
One scheduling detail catches students by surprise every year. Some AP exams are scheduled in the same testing session, which means you cannot sit both of them on the regular testing date. Check your personal AP schedule carefully as soon as your school releases it.
One clear example is AP Calculus AB and AP Calculus BC. In 2027, both are scheduled in the same regular testing session on May 10, so students normally select the calculus exam that matches the course they are taking. This is also logical academically because AP Calculus BC includes the major content covered in Calculus AB along with additional BC topics. If you ever spot a legitimate conflict between two of your AP exams, contact your school's AP coordinator as early as possible. College Board provides designated late-testing dates for approved scheduling conflicts and other qualifying circumstances; in 2027, late testing runs the following week, May 17–21.
Knowing how long each exam runs is not just trivia. It is one of your most useful study tools, and it works best alongside proven strategies to score a 5 on your AP exams.
Use each duration as a target. The most useful ways to build exam-length practice into your study plan are:
Practise full sections under the clock: so the real length feels familiar before exam day.
Build stamina for writing-heavy exams: by practising sustained focus through extended free-response sections.
Rehearse calculator and non-calculator portions: for math and science exams where your particular exam requires them, so neither throws off your rhythm.
