The ACT is the SAT’s counterpart: a shorter test covering English, mathematics and reading, scored out of 36. Since September 2025 the Composite has been the average of those three alone: Science is optional, and where a student takes it the score is reported separately and feeds the STEM score rather than the Composite. It moves at a brisk pace and asks a larger number of straightforward, curriculum-based questions, rewarding students who work quickly and accurately rather than those who unpick a smaller set of dense ones.
