About The Test

What is the TARA?

The TARA is a reasoning test of three compulsory 40-minute modules taken back to back. Critical Thinking and Problem Solving carry 22 multiple-choice questions each, and each is scored on a scale of 1 to 9, reported to one decimal place. The third is a Writing Task: one essay of up to 750 words, chosen from three prompts. No calculator or dictionary is allowed, nothing is deducted for a wrong answer, and time saved in one module cannot be carried into the next.

Why it helps

It is required across Oxford's social sciences – PPE, Economics and Management, Human Sciences, Experimental Psychology and more – as well as Computer Science, and for several courses at UCL
The Writing Task is not scored by the board at all; it goes directly to the admissions tutors reading the application, which makes it a second, unfiltered piece of evidence
It was designed to separate candidates who all hold the highest possible school grades, so it is one of the few places an applicant can genuinely move ahead
