The Best Comprehensive Study About the Digital SAT Maths Section

The SAT Suite Math section is given in two equal parts, each containing a module of test questions. The first module in each form has a mix of easy, medium, and hard questions, while the second module adjusts its average difficulty based on the test taker's performance in the first module. The final section score is calculated using the results from both modules.

Each module contains questions from all four content domains, ordered from easiest to hardest, giving students the chance to showcase their abilities. Pretest questions are included within the sequence. Test-takers have the freedom to navigate through the questions in a given module, but cannot revisit the questions in the first module of Math or return to the Reading and Writing section after moving on to Math.

Length and Questions

The Math section has 44 questions, split into two equal modules for the two stages. Each module has 22 questions, with 20 operational (contributing to the section score) and 2 protests. Pretest answers do not impact a student's Math section score, they are solely used to gather performance data for future use as operational questions. Pretest questions appear the same as operational questions to maintain maximum student effort. The number of pretest questions is minimized to minimize the effect on test-taking.

Time Allotted for each Module

Students have 70 minutes to complete the Math section, divided into two 35-minute modules. When time expires for the first module, students move on to the second module (higher or lower difficulty) and cannot return to the first module.

Score and Time Per Question

Students get a section score for Math based on their performance, which is scaled from 200-800 for SAT, 160-760 for PSAT/NMSQT and PSAT 10, and 120-720 for PSAT 8/9. This score is combined with the Reading and Writing section score to calculate the total assessment score. The average time allotted per section is 1.60 minutes.

Format

75% of Math questions are multiple-choice with 4 options, one of which is the correct answer. The remaining 25% are student-generated responses where students must come up with their own answer and enter it into the platform. These questions may have multiple correct answers, but students are instructed to provide only one answer per question. See appendix D for more information on student-generated response questions.

Information and Graphs

Math section questions sometimes have a visual aid in the form of an informational graphic. This graphic serve two purposes: 1) it accurately portrays the importance and usefulness of data visualizations in math and 2) it evaluates the student's ability to find, understand, and apply information from the graphic to solve problems. The graphics can come in various forms such as XY-Plane graphs, dot plots, scatterplots, bar graphs, line graphs, histograms, and illustrations of geometric shapes

The Math section does not have a formal system for measuring text complexity. For the majority of Math questions (70%) that don't have a context, text complexity is not important. For questions with context, the goal is to minimize the influence of language factors on the student's ability to answer while still providing scenarios that are rich enough for problem-solving in real-world subjects like science and social studies. To achieve this, the language used is kept simple, clear, and direct, and the word count is limited. The test development team for Math (as well as Reading and Writing) have received training in the principles of linguistic modification, which aims to reduce language difficulties in test questions without affecting the construct being tested or reducing its intended rigor.

Domains and Questions

The Math section questions align with the aforementioned statements and are appropriate for the age and level of the students taking the digital SAT Suite assessments. The questions cover one of four content areas, which are:

  • Algebra, where students must proficiently analyze, solve and construct linear equations and inequalities, and proficiently analyze and solve systems of equations using various methods.
  • Advanced Math, where students must show mastery of essential skills and knowledge necessary for moving on to higher-level math courses. This includes proficiency in analyzing, solving, interpreting, and constructing equations of various types, such as absolute value, quadratic, exponential, polynomial, rational, radical, and other nonlinear equations, and proficiency in analyzing and solving systems of linear and nonlinear equations with two variables.
  • Problem-Solving and Data Analysis: Students must use quantitative reasoning to analyze ratios, rates, and proportional relationships; understand and apply the concept of unit rate; and analyze and interpret data with one or two variables.
  • Geometry and Trigonometry (SAT, PSAT/NMSQT, and PSAT 10) / Geometry (PSAT 8/9): Students must solve problems related to the perimeter, area, and volume; angles, triangles, and trigonometry; and circles.
